Eye Opening Office Lighting

When it comes to a designing your office space for all personality types, there are many aspects to consider. Office lighting is sometimes overlooked, yet is an important part of your office’s aesthetics. Many employees may not pay attention to the lighting in their workspace unless it prohibits them from staying productive. However, there are many other reasons why office lighting should be taken seriously and what types of lighting are best.

Dim Lighting

Dim lighting is an often occurrence happening in various offices everywhere. When lights are not bright enough, it results in employees straining their eyes because they need to work harder in order for us to see. This can even cause headaches, a major lack of focus, and lethargy.

If you do not have any control over the lighting in the office, take matters into your own hands with your monitor. Adjust the brightness and contrast so it isn’t adding more strain on your eyes. Also, angle the monitor away from lights getting rid of any glares.

Artificial Lighting

Similar to dim lighting, artificial lighting also causes eyestrain and migraines. But this is one of the most common forms of lighting found in offices. New alternatives must be used in order to benefit employees’ health and productivity.

The same solution for dim lighting should be used for artificial lighting since they cause similar effects. But if you would like to do something more, try to use filters over lighting. They will diffuse the brightness of the lights.

Natural Lighting

Natural lighting in the workplace not only improves productivity, but it also helps employees get more sleep. A recent study showed that workers with windows received 173 percentmore light exposure during the workday and got an additional 46 minutes of sleep every night, according to psychologytoday.com.

This can be difficult when an office space doesn’t have any windows but it isn’t impossible. A few tricks are adding a window to give the effect of a window and creating depth, painting walls white or a pale blue to stimulate the fresh look of natural sunlight or hang large pieces of art on the walls to break up the space like windows would.

Energy Efficient Lighting

It would be almost impossible to light an office with only sunlight peaking in through the windows. Which means that lighting is essential but it can be costly when the right lights are not being utilized.

Consider using these lights in your office: incandescent lamps, halogen lamps and compact fluorescent lamps. All of these lights vary in prices and should be discussed in order to find the perfect fit for your office.
