Myths You’ve Probably Heard About Standing Desks

All The Facts About Standing Desks

If you are tied to your desk for all – or even most – of your day, you have probably considered the health benefits of switching to a standing desk. With all of the ways standing desks can improve your health, posture and productivity, why haven’t more workers converted to standing? Unfortunately, there are several myths you’ve probably heard. We’re here to debunk the top five.

Myth 1: It’s Too Expensive

While it is true there are many extremely functional and innovative standing desk options that have a high price point, there are also plenty of models available at lower price points. Even still, many employees feel hesitant about requesting a new desk because their employers will turn them down. Don’t be afraid to ask them if it’s possible for you to purchase a new desk for your workspace. In truth, most employers simply want their employees to be as happy and efficient as possible, so if a standing desk is on your wish list, do some research into affordable options and present them with the benefits to purchasing the standing desk you need to improve your health.

Myth 2: It Is Tiring/Uncomfortable

Many people think that standing all day will cause undue stress on their legs, back, knees, feet and other joints and cause them physical discomfort or worsen other bone or joint conditions, but experts have found that simply isn’t the case. In fact, most standing desk users feel more energized and awake when working from a standing position. When we stand for long periods of time, we are constantly moving – shifting our weight, leaning one way or another and taking small steps around our workspace. Because of this, we do not tire easily when standing, and the pressure to our lower joints and extremities are negligible, even improving joint pain in many cases.

Myth 3: You’ll Never Be Able to Sit Again

Many people fear that if they switch to a standing desk, they will no longer have the option of sitting. Let’s face it. There are going to be times when we just need to sit down for a bit. Luckily, many models are able to convert from sitting to standing enabling you to enjoy the best of both worlds. For those unable to purchase a convertible model, there are also plenty of tall office chairs and stools to pair with your standing desk for times when you simply must take a seat. With a variety of models to choose from, you are sure to locate a tall office chair perfectly suited for your new standing desk set-up.

Myth 4: It’s Not “Cool”

Other people are afraid they will be judged by choosing to stand. And, that’s partially true. You may be judged, but it probably won’t be in the way you suspect. More often than not, clients, guests and coworkers will admire your innovative thinking and have plenty of questions to ask about your new office space. Even better, your new standing desk may be just the conversation starter you need to land a deal or sign a new potential client.

Myth 5: Standing Will Improve Your Health & Posture

Wait? Is this really a myth? Yes and no. Choosing to stand, rather than sit, will definitely do wonders for your health. BUT, it is not a substitute for increased movement. It is also important to walk, stretch and move about your workspace frequently throughout the day. And while standing desks are known to improve posture, they do need to be ergonomically adjusted to your height to ensure your screens, keyboard, mouse and other tools are easily accessible without causing unnecessary eye, wrist, arm, neck or back strain. So, if you are thinking of purchasing a new standing desk for your office, speak to an experienced office furniture specialist to be sure your new desk meets your height and functionality needs.
